Basic Page Editing

On this page we introduce you to the basics of editing pages on your website.

Editing the Content of an Existing Page

Login to your admin pages, at http://www.gp-uk.net/typo3/

Click on the word 'Page' at topleft

Here we are editing the GP-UK website, but of course when you login it will display the pages of your website.

If necessary, click on the + to expand the 'pagetree' so that you can locate the page that you wish to edit.

There is the page that I want to edit, 'Basic Page Editing', so I click on the name of that page (NB Click on the text of the name of the page, not on the yellow icon).

If the page already has some content then the display that I see will look something like this:

[If this page does not yet have any content, e.g. it is a new page, then this will appear a little different - refer to the section on creating a new page].

There are two ways to open the actual editing screen:

  1. Click on the button 'Edit in Rich Text Editor'.
  2. Click on the little pen icon to the far left of the button 'Edit in Rich Text Editor'.

Either will be equally effective for simple editing. Clicking the little pen icon gives a more complicated display with more options avaialable. Pressing the big button is usually sufficient and gives a simpler screen with fewer options:

Ignore most of the options there and simply type your text in the large white area marked 'Text'.

Type the header for your page.

Then, with your cursor still in this line of text, select the icon for 'paragraph styles', the left hand of the two formatting icons at the top of the 'Text' box:

Choose the Header style required, in this case H1.

This makes your header appear larger and bolder.

Press return and the cursor moves to the next line and is smaller ready to type standard paragraph text.

Type your paragraphs of text. Each press of the return key starts a new paragraph.

You may also enter subheaders into your text, just like you entered the first header above.

Paragraph style choices (e.g. headers) affect the appearance of a whole paragraph even if you select only part of the line. If you want to change the appearance of only part of a line of text, e.g. to make it italic or underlined, then use the right-hand of the two styling buttons after selecting the text to be styled by clicking wiping it with your mouse pointer.

Don't forget to save your work!

The save options are these buttons at the top of the screen:

  1. The first one simply saves your work and leaves you to carry on editing.
  2. The second one saves your work and pops up a second browser window to show you how the page appears.
  3. The third one saves your work and closes the editor.
  4. CAUTION: The simple X is not a save button, it exits without saving your work! So use this button only if you wish to exit the editor and lose your changes, or if you have already saved your changes with one of the other buttons.
  5. CAUTION: The dustbin button, as you might expect, deletes all of this content - use with care.
  6. The curly arrow option is an undo facility. It usually works, but not always quite as you might expect, so please regard it as a bonus rather than as permission to be incautious in your editing.

Notes

  • The message 'This page was last updated on ...' which may be shown on your pages (if included in your selected design) is updated automatically when you save your changes.
  • The changes that you make are immediately displayed to anyone visiting your website. So please check your editing before pressing the save button, and then view the pages straightaway to check them again. Because of this there is also an option to prepare pages and changes 'offline' then only make them live after reviewing them for accuracy - please refer to Advanced Page Editing.
